Surname Folders for Family Research

If you are new to family research, you may not be familiar with the term "Surname Folders." These are often referred to as "Vertical Files" by librarians. They consist of miscellaneous notes and information gathered together on a particular surname. Over the years we've collected digital surname folders and are now making them available to aid in your research. These files contain correspondence between researchers, research reports, family Bible records, military records, courthouse records, newspaper clippings, computer printouts, family group sheets, funeral cards, and other miscellaneous items pertaining to a given surname.

These files are all in TEXT format, making it easy to copy and paste the information into your own documents or genealogy program. Graphic images such as photos and scanned documents are in JPG and PDF formats. You may also find some GEDCOM files which have been submitted by researchers.

A NOTE ABOUT SOUNDEX

Our folders are gathered together by SOUNDEX code. When you order you will receive an email with a login to the particular soundex folder which shares your surname. For example, the names RAKE ROSS RUSS RACHIE ROCH ROCHE ROSE REES RICHEY ROACH REACH REESE RICHEE ROSS REECE RICH ROACH ROSE ROUSE & RICE all share the soundex code, R200. You may check all the alternate spellings and names which sound similar.

We invite you to submit your own notes for inclusion in these folders. In addition to helping other researchers, you may connect with someone who has the missing piece of information you need to further your research.

Surname folders are priced at $3.49 each. This nominal fee is designed to cover the credit card processing fee and pay for the site hosting and bandwidth usage fees.
