John H. Hughes, Captain, Capt. John H. Hughes' Company of Reserves,* (Alleghany County, Virginia), enlisted April 27, 1864 at Covingtow by Lt. Roune for the war, elected Capt., Co. E, 4th Battalion Valley Reserves August 23, 1864, subscribed to Amnesty Oath at Provost Marshall's Office, Charleston, West Virginia, May 5, 1865, description: 46 year old Hotel Keeper, 6' 3", dark complexion, gray eyes, dark hair
This company subsequently became Company C, 10th Battalion, Virginia Reserves (4th Battalion Valley Reserves). Organized August 23, 1864, with five companies, A to E. Some of the men of this battalion served in a temporary field organization known as 3rd (Chrisman's) Battalion Virginia Reserves during the latter part of 1864.
