Historical Notes:
The Virginia 18th Heavy Artillery Battalion was organized in June, 1862, with men from Norfolk and Alexandria, and Southampton, Isle of Wight, and York counties. It contained five companies and was involved in the defense of Richmond throughout the war. In April, 1865, the unit was assigned to Barton's Brigade as infantry and was involved in various conflicts around Appomattox. It surrendered with 2 officers and 23 men.
Predecessor unit:
Alexandria Light Artillery was organized in March, 1861, and mustered into Confederate service in April. The unit fought at First Manassas and in April, 1862, totalled 77 effectives. Later it served in Kershaw's Brigade, saw action in the Seven Days' Battles, then was assigned to C.E. Lightfoot's Battalion in the Department of Richmond. In January, 1864, the company was dismounted and merged into the 18th Battalion Virginia Heavy Artillery. Captains Delaware Kemper and David L. Smoot were its commanders.
