Reese Tate Bowen


BOWEN, Rees Tate, (1809 - 1879) (father of Henry Bowen), a Representative from Virginia; born at “Maiden Springs,” near Tazewell, Tazewell County, Va., January 10, 1809; attended Abingdon Academy, Virginia; engaged in agricultural pursuits; appointed brigadier general of the State militia; member of the State house of delegates 1863-1865; magistrate of Tazewell County for several years prior to the war and presiding justice of the county court a portion of that time; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-third Congress (March 4, 1873-March 3, 1875); was not a candidate for renomination in 1874; resumed agricultural pursuits; died at his home, “Maiden Springs,” in Tazewell County, Va., August 29, 1879; interment in the family burying ground on his estate, “Maiden Springs.”
