In various records, Capt. Matthews name is spelled at Mathews, Mathewes, and Matthews. This company was formed from men who lived in Edgefield County in the area which is now Aiken County. It was organized in mid-1862. It served as heavy artillery and was attached to the 15th South Carolina Heavy Artillery Battalion in June 1863. They were surrendered by General Joseph E. Johnston at Durham Station, Orange County, North Carolina on 26 APR 1865.
