9th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry (3 months, 1861)



Historical Sketch:
Col., H. C. Longnecker; Lieut.-Col., William H. H. Hangen; Maj., Charles Glantz. This regiment was recruited in Chester, Armstrong, Cumberland, Lehigh, Northampton, Schuylkill, and Delaware counties and was mustered into the U. S. service at Harrisburg, April 22 to 24, 1861, to serve for three months. May 4, it arrived at West Chester, encamped there until the 26th and then proceeded to Wilmington, Del. On June 6 it joined Gen. Patterson at Chambersburg and was assigned to the 4th brigade, 1st division, under Gen. Dixon S. Miles. Ten days later it crossed the Potomac, camping near the river, and on the departure of Gen. Miles for Washington reported at Williamsport. It remained near the river until July 1, when it advanced to Martinsburg, and after participation in the movements to Bunker Hill and Charlestown returned to Harrisburg, where it was mustered out on July 29.
