Pre-War Profession Graduated West Point 1840 (1st in class), taught engineering at West Point, resigned 1845, Mexican War, planter, governor.

War Service 1861 Col. of 1st Louisiana, August 1861 Brig. Gen., commanded Dept of Texas, District of West Louisiana and Texas, District of Texas and Territory of Arizona, fought only at Milliken's Bend, commanded the Trans Mississippi at the end of the War.

Born 12 Dec 1818, Iberville Parish.  Baptized 17 Jan 1819, St. Gabriel Catholic Church, St. Gabriel.  Son of Paul HEBERT & Marie Eugenie HAMILTON of Iberville Parish.  Graduated first in class, Jefferson College, Convent, 1836.  Graduated first in class, U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY, 1840.  Married, age 23, Cora Laetitia Wills VAUGHN, 2 Aug 1842, St. Gabriel Catholic Church, St. Gabriel.  Resigned from U.S. Army, 1845. Fought in Mexican War, 1846-47; brevetted COL for gallantry at Molino del Rey, 1847.  Elected governor of LA, 1851, age 33, youngest ever up to that time; served from Jan 1852-Jan 1856.  Served on Governor Thomas O. Moore's 5-man state Military Board, Jan-Mar 1861.  Enlisted in 1st Regiment Heavy Artillery, 11 Apr 61, New Orleans, as COL, age 42.  Appointed BG, Aug 61.  Commanded Department of TX; Galveston, TX, defenses; Subdistrict of North LA.  Active in Democratic Party politics after the War.  Died of cancer, New Orleans, 29 Aug 1880, age 61.  Buried St. Raphael Cemetery, near Bayou Goula.
First cousin of BG Louis HEBERT.
