The First Families Project
Edgefield County, SC

This is an on-going project to research and publish information on the first families of Edgefield County, South Carolina. Today this metropolitan area is known as the Central Savannah River Area or CSRA and has a population of 400,000.

This project focuses on the families who were in the area prior to 1800. Before the year 1785, Edgefield County was a part of NinetySix District, which then included a very extensive territory in the upper part of the State. In 1785 Ninety-Six was divided into the Counties of Edgefield, Abbeville, Newberry, Laurens, Union, and Spartanburg. Parts of Edgefield later went to form Aiken (1871), Saluda (1895), Greenwood (1897), and McCormick (1916) counties. Today, AIKEN County has most of the population, although early records are still in the EDGEFIELD County Courthouse.

We have identified 796 surnames (with about 25 more variations in spellings) making up the 1,727 families and the 12,267 people living in Edgefield County, SC in 1790.

This CDROM contains surname folders on all of these surnames. Some have just a few pages and others contain hundreds. Not all of the notes have connections to Edgefield County, but the information is designed to help you research your family both before and after the family was in Edgefield County.

Also included on the CDROM:

A History of Edgefield County by John A. Chapman
The 1790 Census of Edgefield County
    Early and current maps
    Bibliography for additional research
